Wellness / Self-care

I’ve hit that point again.. There's a very distinct feeling and moment at which I begin to realize I'm starting to feel drained.  It's like the moment you're driving along and the orange gas light pops on to let you know you're getting close to empty, getting close to needing a fill.  That's me, in this moment.  Self care is easily forgettable.  For me when life gets busy, our social calendar is filled up, there are people who demand attention and care, it's spring and I'm feeling the urgency of newness, needing to get the garden cleaned up and vegetable seed orders placed, taxes, main floor ceilings that needs to be repainted - life.  And it's a balance of the thrill of knowing I'm running on empty and pushing the limits, while also being aware that I'm about to hit a wall and be empty, stranded on the side of the road when it's not fun or thrilling anymore.

The night we arrived home from our trip to Vancouver in November James and I watched a documentary.  We love documentaries, and we have always been particularly interested in issues about health and wellness.  I don't really know what it was about this documentary in particular that struck us.  Honestly I think it was more that the timing was right.  We'd watched plenty of documentaries, read all of Michael Pollan's books, and altered and changed things in our diets many times over.  But since that night, watching that documentary, we haven't eaten any meat.

Natural Cold Remedies

Natural Cold Remedies

Being sick is the worst.  This time of year seems to bring out the colds in people.  I was going to say there's nothing like having a cold during the winter months, but really there's no good time to get sick, and colds during the summer may even be worse.  In any case when either of us begin feeling that dreaded scratchy throat, runny nose, or itchy ears we have a natural health care regime that we promptly begin.  As per my philosophy on health and wellness I think it's important to provide your body with what it needs to fight off any illness rather than take meds to lessen the symptoms momentarily.  (Obviously there's a place for said meds too, because let's be honest, relief from that stupid one nostril being plugged for any amount of time can provide a little light at the end of the tunnel.)  Here are the things I keep on hand once those symptoms start popping up, in hopes of lessening the degree of sick.

Wellness // Journaling

Health and wellness are important parts of my life.  It's something I feel really passionate about in myself and others.  I take time to invest in myself in this way often.  Journaling has played a part of my health and wellness routine for a long time.  Growing up I didn't keep a diary exactly but I journaled my way through life.  It was a ritual.  It was therapy.  It was a release.

Wellness // Cleansing

Cleansing has become a annual ritual/practice for me.  Going on a cleanse is a great way to get back on track, kick start a healthier diet, and re-set eating habits.   I know technically January is the start of a new year but in a lot of ways September feels more like an appropriate time for change and new beginnings.  James and I have been chatting about starting a cleanse for a few weeks now and so, I thought I would share a little about the changes and restrictions we make in doing so.  There are lots of different philosophies, guidelines and programs as far as cleansing is concerned.  I've taken quite a few different approaches but have come up with some pretty simple guidelines that I follow each time I feel the need to cleanse without having to research the latest and greatest or pump my body full of supplements.  Here's what I do:

Wellness // Anxiety

I've struggled with anxiety for most of my life.  When I was around 15 it was pretty intense.  I was loosing my hair, and eventually had to see a stomach specialist for the symptoms.  By my early 20's I was experiencing mild anxiety attacks that would come on spontaneously.  My breath felt constricted in my throat and I had this overwhelming sense of something being off or very wrong without knowing what.  In the last few years I feel like I've been taking steps that help curb my anxiety to where I don't often feel anxious or worried or out of control on the reg.  There are many different forms of anxiety and where it stems from can vary greatly.  For me anxiety comes from the crazy thoughts of perfectionism in my head and feeling out of control of events, outcomes and circumstances.  Here are some of the things that I've been actively doing that have made a huge difference for me in dealing with anxiety in the last few years.

Wellness // How to Shift Your Mood

I'm pretty certain I'm not alone in having off days.   Those days when it feels like the universe is forcing you to stop what you're doing cause nothing is going the way you planned it.  Those days when you feel blah or glum or negative or all of the above.  Like you just wish the weather would turn miserable so you have an excuse to hole up inside and feel badly for yourself.  Sounds so dramatic, but it happens, so, I thought I would share how I usually get out of my slump and shift my mood.
