Cheers // Christmas + 2017

Cheers // Christmas + 2017

I know I'm not the only one to feel like Christmas/December has flown by this year.  It's been a busy, cold, and at times exhausting month but we've made it!  I LOVE this season, but have always felt like the build up is the best part.  Most years by the time December 25th arrives I feel so disappointed to have to consider putting away the ornaments and records until next year.  This year feels different.  I think it has to do with looking ahead.  2016 was quite a year.  It was full of the most wonderful moments and yet, was raw, and scary, and unpredictable.

Foraged Holiday Wreath

It's December!  More than Christmas I love the energy and feeling in the air throughout this whole month.  It's pure magic.  The snow and cold, having a calendar filled with weekend plans for holiday drinks and dinners with people you love,  the sparkly lights, the smells of pine and cinnamon, saying "Happy Christmas" to strangers. It's all perfection.

2016 Christmas Tree Hunt

2016 Christmas Tree Hunt

Holiday tradition has become increasingly important to us over the last few years.  I think it's really important to establish our own way of doing Christmas as a family of three: to be intentional about how we spend each Christmas and make a point of doing things that are unique and memorable for us.  One of the traditions we began just after getting married was to go on a Christmas tree hunt.  We'd get up early, make coffee, bundle up, and pack ourselves and a good saw into the truck and head to the mountains.  It's become one of my favourite things about Christmas.  I look forward to it and plan it well before December gets crazy.  Our tradition has since evolved and each year we have included good friends in our hunt for the perfect tree.

Cozy Home

I know I'm not the only one who feels like hibernating when the snow starts to fall.  There's something so romantic about spending snowy nights cozied up with good food, wine, and candles at home.  It's snowed a few times in Calgary, although up until this point it hasn't stuck. As the snow and Christmas near I've been spending time adding elements to our home that make it feel ready for those cozy snowy nights.  Here are a few ways I've made our house hibernation friendly for the impending winter months.

VLOG // Exploring Vancouver

By nature I am a pretty planned, organized, and scheduled person.  I do, however, aspire to be more spontaneous.  While James and I were on a date night last weekend we started talking about going on a road trip West.  We got home from dinner and started planning.  After a little planning and even more spontaneity we set out Tuesday for our grand adventure.

To The Mountains!

To The Mountains!

I often wonder if people from other places of the world forget to explore and visit the beauty that surrounds them as often as we do with the mountains.  For example, if I lived in London would I forget to explore the castles, history, and museums in every direction just because I was used to them being there?  It may just be our lifestyle that doesn't often take us to the mountains, or maybe we've taken them for granted in being so close for so long.  After this weekend, however,  I was reminded of how we need to make more time for weekend drives West.  There's something about that mountain air, feeling so small in the majesty of the mountains and wilderness, and the simple act of getting out of the city.
